Can anyone help me identify our rock climbing companion from Citrusdaal, South Africa?

---I can't post a picture, so here's a description - it's about 6in long and quite thick bodied, very scaly leathery skin, a few very small spikes around the back edge of the jaw on either side and on the nape. colour is washed-out green, and its ear is a large disc of skin at the back of the head in line with the mouth.

any ideas ?
